Overview of the Offence

Under section 368 of Quebec’s Highway Safety Code, every driver and cyclist must come to a complete stop when facing a stop sign.A full stop means the vehicle’s wheels must come to a total halt before the stop line, crosswalk, or intersection. A quick “rolling stop” does not satisfy the legal requirement. Drivers must also yield to pedestrians and vehicles with the right of way before proceeding.

At railway crossings, a driver may continue only once it is safe to do so.
