Overview of the Law

Under section 326.1 of the Highway Safety Code, a driver must not cross any of the following roadway markings:

A single solid line
A solid double line
A double line consisting of one broken line and one solid line, where the solid line is adjacent to the driver’s lane
Crosshatch markings

70 km/h sur les routes en gravier
50 km/h en agglomération

These markings indicate areas where lane changes or passing are considered unsafe and are intended to maintain predictable traffic flow and road safety.

Legal Exceptions to
‍The Rule

The prohibition does not apply if the driver can do so safely in one of the following situations:

Entering a public road from the shoulder, a private road, or private property
Leaving a lane that is obstructed or closed to traffic
Making a left turn to enter private property
Making a right turn to pull onto the shoulder or enter private property
Entering a lane reserved for left turns
Crossing a lane reserved exclusively for certain vehicles

Outside of these clearly defined exceptions, crossing a solid line for convenience, overtaking, or lane correction is not permitted.

Demonstrating that the crossing was necessary to avoid an obstacle, exit a closed lane, or access private property

Unclear or defective road markings

Faded paint, construction zones, or inconsistent signage can undermine the charge

Weather conditions, roadwork, visibility issues, or traffic conditions may create reasonable doubt

Penalties for Crossing a Solid Line

A violation of section 326.1 generally results in:

2 demerit points
A fine between $100 and $200

50 km/h en agglomération

In aggravating circumstances — such as near schools, intersections, or on heavily trafficked roads — the total financial penalty may be higher. Repeated offences can also negatively affect a driver’s safety record and lead to higher insurance premiums.
